The History of Diamonds
From three hundred to one billion years ago, deep within the earth, carbon atoms were squeezed together to form the hardest substance in the world, also known as diamond. These precious gems are formed in the earth’s interior and elevated to the surface by active volcanoes.
Diamonds were first mined in India, but the earliest diamond capital of the world was Venice. In the 20th century this switched hands to Antwerp, Belgium and has remained since.
